Deutsche Oper am Rhein takes actions in sustainability

Since spring 2023, sustainability officer Uta Gardemann has been responsible for climate protection and sustainable transformation at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Germany. She has gained many years of experience in the area of sustainability - especially in the renewable energy sector - and has written certified sustainability reports.

Deutsche Oper am Rhein is currently starting to draw up a climate balance sheet. All emissions from energy consumption, transport, travel activities but also the arrival of the public and many other factors are measured and thus result in the calculation of the carbon footprint. The complex data collection is currently a large area of work that involves all opera and ballet departments. Where is our greatest consumption and what measures can we develop to reduce it? We can only work on this together and for this purpose, Uta Gardemann has put together a green team made up of 20 employees from all departments. This team collects topics beyond CO2-emissions, identifies concrete implementation options and brings the ideas to the workforce.

Sustainability in the cultural sector is particularly challenging. We can only maintain artistic freedom if we operate more sustainably and thus secure financial support. Art can do anything, let's just do it differently than before. For example, the audience can contribute to reducing their carbon footprint by traveling in an environmentally friendly way: the ticket for local public transport is already included in the opera ticket.

RhineCleanUp

On September 9th, Uta Gardemann and the green team of Deutsche Oper am Rhein organised the RhineCleanUp, an event dedicated to cleaning up and collecting rubbish on the banks of the river Rhine in Düsseldorf. The aim is to draw attention to the pollution of rivers and seas, as well as to raise awareness among employees on the issue of waste in the opera house and in the production of stage sets.
